This elegantly designed old Imari long plate has a rectangular surface divided into left and right halves by a haze pattern, one side being white porcelain and the other being a checkered pattern.

Each of the five pieces features a wonderful color development between the white porcelain base and the blue and white porcelain, and the clear contrast enhances the crisp impression.

Examples of checkered patterns can be seen in early Imari and indigo Kutani, but the number is limited, and even checkered patterns are often combined with other patterns, so it is surprisingly difficult to find a clean one.

I think the simplicity of just the checkered pattern is valuable.

It is believed to have been made between the 1660s and 1680s, a time when Imari ware reached its peak, achieving pure white bodies, neat shapes, and meticulous, painterly painting.

When turned over, each piece has the inscription "Made in the Jiajing era of the Ming dynasty" in the center.

The Shibata couple's comprehensive collection of over 10,000 pieces of Arita porcelain includes a similar piece. It has the same design, but features a gourd painted in red in the margins. The inscription on the back also dates it to the Jiajing era.
