Bowl with bird and flower design
This large tea bowl has a flower-and-bird design in indigo on a pure white base.
The soft skin, typical of the 17th century, and generous size are very attractive.
The flower-and-bird design depicted here is probably modeled on late Ming porcelain that came all the way from China.
The body is decorated with two birds and flowers. The way the birds are painted and the flowers expressed in shades of indigo are improvised, but they are charming and tasteful.
In contrast, the flowers depicted on the prospective subjects are European in style, and the difference between the flowers and birds is interesting and fascinating to behold.
As you know, the pottery called "Oranda" does not refer only to those fired in the Netherlands.
In the Nanban trade, pottery fired in the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, England, etc. was brought to Japan by European merchants.
After the isolation of Japan, only the Dutch were allowed to trade, so the name "Oranda" remained as a generic term.
At the time, feudal lords and tea masters were enamored with this exotic pottery, and there are records that they ordered it in droves.
The entire piece has been repaired with gold.
It must have been cherished for a long time. Even the smallest parts have been picked up and repaired.

It comes with an old box and is marked "Oranda Bowl".
