During the late Joseon period, literati and scholars established studies near their homes, cherishing them as places for writing poetry and enjoying calligraphy. One way they expressed their longing for an ideal study through small vessels was by creating water droppers in the shape of houses.

The appearance of a simple house turned into a vessel is a characteristic form unique to Joseon-period water droppers, and such pieces are known to be extremely rare today.

This work is a white porcelain house-shaped water dropper that looks like a miniature of a humble dwelling.

Although it is white porcelain, it differs in character from the polished white porcelain often imagined; it has a rustic, grayish surface. The shape of the vessel has a certain ease about it, with the fluted detail on the roof and its solid, slightly flared base making a lasting impression. While it evokes the unadorned traditional Korean house, it possesses a distinct presence when held in the palm of one's hand.

It is difficult to determine the precise age of this type of water dropper from its form and construction alone, but this piece is conjectured to have been made in the late 19th century.

Furthermore, there are several silver repairs on the roof and base.

These are considered to be vintage repairs, suggesting that the piece was actually used and cherished over many years. Such marks of repair are not merely patches for damage, but also tell the story of how this small water dropper has been admired by connoisseurs for quite some time.

A rustic, powerful house shape, untouched by flashy or elaborate decoration.

It seems that the beauty the people of Joseon found in their everyday homes and their longing for time spent in a quiet study are gently distilled into this small water dropper.
