This is a white porcelain water dropper with a flat, rounded, and refined form. While the design is extremely simple, this simplicity highlights the sharp rise of its shoulders, the color of the white porcelain, and its smooth texture. When held in the hand, it is a piece that conveys a distinct sense of tension in its form, despite its quiet demeanor.

This piece was made during the mid-Joseon period, around the 18th century.

Much like those from the early Joseon period, extant examples of water droppers from this era are extremely rare and valuable. There are various differences between 18th- and 19th-century water droppers, but the most easily identifiable is the construction of the spout. While those from the 19th century feature a spout with a tapered, trimmed lower section, 18th-century water droppers are made with a rounded, pouch-like protrusion at the base. This characteristic is clearly visible in this piece.

On the underside, there is a somewhat thick, circular foot ring. Traces of sand adhere to the inside of the foot in places, and this style of foot, which differs from that of later water droppers, is an intriguing detail that points to its origin in the 18th century.

The white porcelain has a very neutral, near-pure white tone. The purity of this white is complemented by the softness of the clay visible through the glaze and subtle irregularities in the glazing, which add a rich and gentle character. It is a quintessential mid-Joseon water dropper that quietly draws out the beauty of its form and the white porcelain itself without excessive ornamentation.

It is also in excellent condition, with no damage or repairs. As it is a small vessel that fits in the palm of your hand, this is a piece I invite you to hold and observe closely to appreciate its rounded silhouette and smooth porcelain surface.
