Compared to the hanging Buddha statues you often see, this one has a richer three-dimensional feel, and feels more like a carving in the round than a relief. It is a small statue less than 9cm tall, but it is an impressive hanging Buddha statue.

Originally, it was probably a sacred statue placed at the center of the main body. During the Kamakura period, hanging Buddha statues began to have a more three-dimensional appearance. This statue is also thought to have been made during that period.

If you look at the details, you'll see that it's very meticulous.

The long, narrow eyes, the bridge of the nose, the limbs, the lines of the robe, the lotus pedestal, and the delicate fingertips holding a medicine jar in the palm of the hand are also eye-catching.

The calm and dignified expression exudes a sense of peace and comfortable tension. The careful construction conveys the faith of the people of the past. This is something that all good Buddhist statues have in common, no matter how small.

Buddhist sculptures become more technically sophisticated as the era progresses, but the beauty of Kamakura period statues is that they combine spirituality and technical skill in an excellent balance.

It is in good condition, with some plating remaining in places.

Among the hanging Buddha statues that are a staple of Buddhist art, this statue has a distinctive sparkle.
