Annam refers to ancient pottery from Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and Thailand, which has long been imported to Japan as tea ceremony utensils.
Vietnam has built a rich ceramic culture second only to China with its outstanding technology, but in terms of market value, it is still relatively inexpensive, meaning that attractive products can be purchased at affordable prices.
The shape rises from a high base in a beautiful, flawless curve. The refined shape shows the skill of a ceramic powerhouse of the time.

This tea bowl is solid white with a single stripe of indigo. It is of a type known as plain Annan.
It has a warm off-white color and a matte texture. The entire piece is covered with fine crazing. The unique texture, reminiscent of an eggshell, is an attractive texture not found in white porcelain from other countries, and is one of the true charms of Annan white porcelain.

Looking inside, you can see a brown band with an unglazed snake-eye pattern. In the center of the band is something that looks like a character. It is simplified, but it is probably a single Chinese character.

I have always been drawn to the many attractive pottery pieces made in Annan, but because it is not well known, I have not had many opportunities to introduce it.
We added this piece to our lineup, believing that it conveys the charm of Annan white porcelain in a straightforward manner, and is large enough to be used as a tea bowl, will resonate with many people.
