An irresistibly deep and serenely clear lapis-blue glaze.

When held in the hand, its lustrous surface radiates a beauty reminiscent of a gemstone, and though made of porcelain, it possesses something of the refinement of personal adornment.

Among Kutani wares produced in Arita, Kyushu in the 17th century during the Edo period, pieces entirely covered in a deep lapis glaze are commonly referred to as Ruri Kutani or Kutani-de Ruri.

The subdued, rich blue subtly changes expression depending on the light, revealing new depths each time it is viewed.

On the body, delicate pink dianthus blossoms are rendered in gold.

Slender, graceful stems and flowers swaying in the breeze breathe a quiet sense of Japanese elegance into the composition, where the use of negative space plays an essential role.

Though splendid, it is never excessive. Its dignified presence conveys the refined aesthetic associated with Ko-Kutani.

The lid is crowned with a plum blossom finial. On closer inspection, the branch is expressed in darkened silver, while the white plum petals are modeled in gentle relief. At the heart of each blossom, fine stamens are meticulously picked out in gold. One cannot help but pause to admire the concentrated craftsmanship contained within this small decorative detail.

Incense burners of this kind would have been extremely luxurious objects at the time. Works employing such costly pigments and generous applications of gold and silver were likely reserved for the highest social classes. One might imagine a noble lady in her private chambers, quietly enjoying the fragrance of incense and contemplating the passing of the seasons.

Within its restrained palette of blue, gold, silver, and white unfolds a world both tranquil and richly expressive.

A work that fully embodies the gem-like brilliance and distinctly Japanese refinement of Ko-Kutani.
