Shortly after Korean potters founded Karatsu ware at the foot of Mount Kishi in Saga Prefecture, Takatori ware was founded at the foot of Mount Takatori in Fukuoka Prefecture by potter Hachizan, who was brought back by Kuroda Nagamasa.

A typical design of Takatori ware is one in which the left and right sides are glazed with iron-brown and milky white glazes. This design was so popular that various items, including tea bowls, mukozuke (tableware), and hand bowls, are made with this design.

This piece is a bi-colored tea bowl with striking, clear contrast.
It is common to see two types of glaze mixed together, but in this piece, there are traces of the border being smoothed out vertically, perhaps to create a clear contrast.
It comes with a treasure bag, and the lacquer box has the inscription "Takatori Ware" painted in gold.
Originally made as a tea ceremony utensil, this bowl is the perfect size and also features an elegant design that you can enjoy.
