Sake bottle with iron painting from Mt. Gyeryongsan kiln

Mt. Gyeryongsan, a famous mountain rising in the mid-western part of the Korean Peninsula.

A group of pottery fired at the foot of the mountain is commonly referred to as Gyeryongsan.

Among them, the works painted with iron pigments on top of white slip are unique to Mt Gyeryongsan kilns.

The thinly raised body, small and tight base, and free and vigorous painting are all characteristic of this type of ware.

Although there are many kilns on the Korean peninsula that produced powdered blue ware, the formative appeal of Gyeryongsan. ceramics is unsurpassed and has captivated lovers of the antique since ancient times.

This piece is a Tokkuri (a sake bottle) made of a gray base with a white slip applied with a brush, and then carved with stripes to divide the body, and then painted with iron on the center of the body.

The dynamic iron painting is eye-catching, however, without regard to the division by the stripes.

The sturdy shape with a large, stout waist and the peaceful appearance are both appealing.

The spout is in the shape of a ladle with the rim slightly inward.

Except for one old piece, it is in very good condition.

The color and pattern change depending on where the piece is trimmed.

This piece has a light blue base with several white stripes and a yellow band underneath.

The way of trimming fabric overlaps with the design of the tokkuri is also superbly tailored.
